Do you watch TV and Eat?

You’re sitting on the couch and you’ve got your show all queued up. You immediately think “what am I going to eat?” Watching TV for most food addicts is what is known as a ‘trigger’ for their addictive activity (eating.) Alcoholics have triggers to drink, such as bars or certain people. Food addicts have triggers that are equally powerful and equally difficult to overcome. Often people think that the ability to only eat when you’re hungry and make healthy choices is simply an issue of willpower, but those people would be wrong. Sugar, one of the most highly addictive foods that a person can consume, actually stimulates the same part of your brain as cocaine; and not surprisingly leaves us with an insatiable need to feed that addiction.

This ‘power’ that food has can seem overwhelmingly and would leave anyone feeling helpless. In some ways you are powerless against… (continue reading)

4 Secret Costs of Being Fat

But did you know that being fat is costing you more than just your health? That extra weight is hurting your pocketbook and endangering your life in some unexpected ways, too.

1. Over-Priced for Over-Sized Clothes
If you’re an overweight woman, you probably struggle with self imagine issues. You don’t like the way you look and struggle to find clothes that fit. You might also notice that you’re paying more for clothes. Many stores charge as much as double for plus-sized versions of their normal sized clothes. Boutique stores catering to the huskier set can set their prices at astonishing levels, as the market for extra large clothing grows. In addition, these plus-sized options are… (continue reading)

Becky and Wayne testimony

“Wayne and I are both looking great AND feeling great. Some of the clothes I couldn’t even get into when I started this are now too loose. To be honest, I never really expected this degree of success. And Wayne is really impressive: not only is he thinner, but he’s much more active. He’s stepping up for yard chores I figured he’d never do. The “makeover” is extending into our whole lives!”

-Becky and Wayne are a married couple in Riverside.

Money reality check

Thin, fit people make more money, we have known that for decades. A recent study in the Journal of Applied Psychology demonstrated that weight has a significant impact on a woman’s pay – the fatter you are the less money you make. In fact, skinny women make on average $22,000 more dollars per year than average-weight woman.

Now, before you get too upset, medical

research is also very clear, skinny women are healthier and live much longer lives than average-weight women. While it might not “be fair” and it might be discriminatory, it is certainly based on an assessment of what is healthy and not on an unrealistic or sick perversion of the female form.

I find this study particularly fascinating because I talk to women all the time that are desperate to lose weight, desperate to get skinny, know that the Skinny Coach diet will work and say they can’t afford it – they do not… (continue reading)

Staying Skinny Over the Holidays

I love Christmas and the holiday season! Every decoration, all the music, and the food – I love the sights and smells of all the holiday goodies. My skinny girls and I do not eat these foods anymore because they trigger overeating and out of control behavior for us. But, not everyone has to give up holiday treats to stay skinny. Here are some tips to keep your skinny.

1. Eat three meals a day. It is especially important to eat breakfast. You might think that you are saving calories but in fact you have over 400% chance of being overweight if you are a breakfast skipper. Eating all your meals will help you from binging on more fattening foods.

2. Eat enough protein, at every meal. Protein will keep you full longer and keep your blood glucose levels stable which will keep your cravings at bay. Some good protein… (continue reading)

What Science Says about Losing Weight

Losing weight is not easy because by the time you are overweight your brain and your body bio chemistry has been altered permanently. By overeating sugar and flour you have literally changed the neurological structure of your brain and also damaged the hormonal systems that regulate hunger and fat storage. You must lose weight with a diet but you can’t stay on a diet when your biochemical drives are working against you. There must be a fundamental and complete change in intake and behavior and if YOU knew how to change your behavior, if you were able to change your behavior, you would not be overweight. Cognitive techniques and behavioral modification is a complicated science but when utilized effectively can actually solve the issue. You must identify and institute habits, stressors and situations that determine your behavior, you must develop strategies to avoid emotional eating and other eating triggers. You… (continue reading)

Cocaine Addiction and Sugar

Do you think cocaine is addictive? Most people do, yet they deny that food is addictive. Remarks like eat less and exercise more are as futile as telling an alcoholic to simply not drink as much. Research has found that cocaine addicted rats work eight times harder to get sugar than cocaine. The researchers are quoted as saying, “Cocaine reward pales in comparison to sugar.” Other research found that even when giving rats electric shocks they will still continue to eat and seek sugar. Sugar is not like other foods and all calories are not the same. Sugar excites the reward part of your brain that activates addiction. Food and sugar specifically is biologically addictive — this is not an issue of willpower and just eat less is never going to cut it. If you can’t moderate, then the only answer is abstinence.
