Junk Food Rehab

refined_foods-theskinny

Ernest Noble at UCLA has linked a dopamine receptor that is linked to alcohol, cocaine and nicotine addiction to refined carbohydrates as well. When I was 100 pounds overweight trying every possible diet and failing, I wish I had know that any diet that included refined carbs was guaranteed to fail me and keep me fat. It is like an alcoholic drinking occasionally –     PLEASE! It is well-known that abstinence is the only solution for addiction and guess what – food addiction is no different.

Most are still convinced that fat people lack willpower or that talking about food addiction is removing responsibility. It is not the case. Yes, once we know the solution we have to take responsibility and abstain from the drug of choice. But until recently, this was not an option because the information was not out there, and frankly it still isn’t. There are not many program options for compulsive overeaters. Skinny Coach is one, Overeaters Anonymous another – but the diet industry is still talking about moderation. MODERATE? Really? If I could moderate I would not have been 100 pounds overweight. If my Skinny Girls could moderate they would not have not been on the phone crying to me that they could not stand being out of control. If they could moderate, people would not hire me out of desperation because they need my help. If they could moderate they would have.

Skinny Coach is an option, Overeaters Anonymous is another, but the diet industry is still talking about moderation. MODERATE? Really? If I could moderate I would not have been 100 pouds overweight. I’m not the only one who struggles with that; I hear the stores from my Skinny Girls about feeling out-of-control. If people could moderate, would there be so many obese people in the U.S.? The difference is that I’ve found the solution.

Another lie the diet industry has everyone believing is that you have to have a little bit of everything or you will feel deprived. That is the one of the most childish claims I have heard. Only with food is this position espoused. No one can have everything that they want, and if they are mature they learn to live with limitations. Some people have physical handicaps; some people can’t live in the city or neighborhood that they want; some people can’t go to the college of their choice – and some people can’t eat whatever they want.

We now know that the brain of the food addict is predisposed to respond differently to refined foods due to dopamine receptor deficiencies. Eating the refined, addictive foods stimulate the release of neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin resulting in euphoria. The problem is the euphoria is short-term and tolerance builds, which leads to more weight gain and more out-of-control behavior. If your eating is out of control, if you are always starting a diet and eventually failing, if your pants no longer fit, if you are dreading the upcoming holidays because you have nothing to wear and you know you will gain another 10 pounds, if you are bloated, sick, tired and hopeless, you now have a solution. You have the answer now it; is a matter of taking responsibility. Denial is not an option anymore.

If you have questions or want to talk about whether you may have an unhealthy physical attachment to foods like sugar and flour please fill out the Skinny Coach quiz and I will call you for a free 1 hour nutritional consultation and tell you about the one easy, healthy secret that will help your lose belly fat.

White Tea Zaps Fat!

whitetea-theskinny

I have been a strong advocate of white tea for years. White tea is the immature bud of green tea and is less processed, has less caffeine and has more antioxidants than green tea. It is also noticeably sweeter and lighter tasting than green tea. Now researchers in Germany, led by Marc Winnefeld, have found that white tea also has anti-obesity effects. That’s right, white tea has two major fat-busting components. First white tea reduces the formation of new fat cells, AND it also stimulates the breakdown of fat in already existing cells. The explanation is complicated, but the conclusion is spectacular. Finally here’s something we can ingest that actually will make us skinny! Drink at least 3 cups a day, 8-10 is even better and watch the fat cells disappear.

Brain Candy?

braincandy-theskinny

Americans as a whole are focused on health, well-being and weight loss, but down the road we may be more concerned about our brain function. Did you know that women and men with chronically high blood sugar have an increased risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia? High blood sugar causes inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are very bad for your brain. A study published in the December 2008 issue of the Annals of Neurology, funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the American Diabetes Association concludes that abnormal regulation of blood sugar is linked to an increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia.

What can you do now to insure that you will be able to read and understand this later?

Eliminate sugar, flour and all refined foods from your diet; it’s a lifestyle change that will benefit your waistline and your mind. And exercise – even if it is just 10 minutes a day. Use your mind in unusual ways – try sudoku or a crossword puzzle, learn a new language – you can even brush your teeth with your other hand to give your brain a boost.

Resistant Starch – Who Knew?

resistantstarches

Resistant starches are a weight loss TRICK that really works. These starches contribute in many ways to weight loss and over all digestive health. What are they? Beans, peas, lentils, potatoes, yams, nuts and seeds, unripe bananas and whole grains such as barley and brown rice are all resistant starches and will help you lose weight.

Starch consists of molecules of glucose linked to each other forming amylose and amylopectin. Amylopectin molecules have a branched shape and fit together loosely, which makes them easier to digest. Amylose molecules fit together tightly and form granules that are much harder to digest. Most plant food is made up of 20-25% amylose, but resistant starches contain much more amylose (60-80%) than amylopectin, so they are resistant to digestion.

Normally your body digests starches in your stomach and small intestine, turning them to glucose (blood sugar) to fuel your body and store the excess as fat. When you eat resistant starches, however, they digest differently, passing through the stomach and small intestine and settling in the large intestine. There they ferment, helping in several different ways.

One: They create beneficial short chain fatty acids including butyrate that help promote weight loss by increasing the amount of stored and just consumed fat your body burns and reducing blood sugar and insulin levels.

Two: They protect the lining of your colon by decreasing ph, which boosts calcium absorption and blocks absorption of cancer causing substances.

Three: They help the growth of healthy bacteria (probiotics) which gives your immune system a boost.

Four: They prompt your body to produce more of the hormones that signal satiety and fullness, so you feel full sooner and eat less!

How do you benefit the most from eating these foods? Cooking these starches breaks them down somewhat (gelatinization), making them easier to digest; cooling them thoroughly before you eat them gives the starch a chance to harden into a crystallized form (retrogradation) that is harder for the body to digest. So eat these foods cooked then cooled!

For New Year’s Eve, What Size is Your Little Black Dress Going to Be?

nyescale-theskinny

The season of eating has begun. From Halloween candy corn to New Year’s Eve egg nog, we will have Christmas and Hanukkah feasts and many parties in between – and that means weight gain. I have the solution at the end of this blog… Long term studies have shown that we gain a large proportion of our yearly weight gain over the holiday season, and more importantly that weight is NOT lost during the rest of the year. Magazine article, after blog entry, after nutritionist tip will tell you: 1) exercise more 2) drink less 3) eat less 4) try these low-calorie, low-fat (yucky) recipes 5) focus on socializing If anyone could follow these tips they would not be gaining weight over the holidays. If you gained weight last holiday season, if you gained weight during the 2014 holiday season, and the 2015 festivities… you probably can’t exercise more, drink less, eat less and focus on socializing – OR YOU WOULD HAVE. Last year during elementalyou the Get Skinny For the Holiday – a special group of 7 women started the SKINNY COACH SOLUTION DIET and together they lost over 100 pounds by the New Year (check them out). RIGHT NOW you can be part of the Get Skinny for the Holiday Group — How much will you lose by New Year’s Day? skinnycoach-black-dress

Which Little Black Dress will you be wearing New Year’s Eve?

What Science Says about Losing Weight

science-losing-weight-skinny-coach

Losing weight is not easy because by the time you are overweight your brain and your body bio chemistry has been altered permanently. By overeating sugar and flour you have literally changed the neurological structure of your brain and also damaged the hormonal systems that regulate hunger and fat storage. You must lose weight with a diet but you can’t stay on a diet when your biochemical drives are working against you. There must be a fundamental and complete change in intake and behavior and if YOU knew how to change your behavior, if you were able to change your behavior, you would not be overweight. Cognitive techniques and behavioral modification is a complicated science but when utilized effectively can actually solve the issue. You must identify and institute habits, stressors and situations that determine your behavior, you must develop strategies to avoid emotional eating and other eating triggers. You must institute plans, organization and structures that make it second nature to eat the correct foods. The brain and body can be re wired and fixed but it is not as simple as a diet. If you need help the Skinny Coach Solution not only is a health diet, not low fat, not low carb, free from processed foods that will help you lose a significant amount of weight fairly quickly – it is a set of techniques, skills, talk therapy, group support and behavioral re wiring that statistically is very very successful. If you would like to know more then I would like to offer you a complementary session – just click here, take the quiz and schedule a time to talk.
Good luck.

What are your behavioral cues or triggers?

skinnycoach-behavioral-cues-triggers

Losing weight is not about a diet or food plan. It certainly is not about an exercise plan. Losing weight is about changing your behavior. You have to design a life where weight loss is automatic. Changing your behavior is very difficult because you have associations, cues and triggers about food that are hard wired through repetition and reward pathways in the brain. If your unconscious eating habits are making you fat, sick and tired it is important to realize that the reason you can’t stay on a healthy eating plan is because you are not conscious of your underlying patterns. Therefore, while there are a number of ways to effectively help people change these patterns you first have to recognize them so then you can “reprogram” your behavior. Environmental triggers are by far the most common type of trigger. Seeing a bag of chips, chocolate chip cookie or the ice cream in the freezer is an obvious environmental cue to eat, eat more, eat too much. Shifting the unconscious choice is as simple as removing the trigger. Of course, first you have to have motivation to change, but assuming that is there – remove the ice cream and you have behavioral design! You have removed the trigger so you don’t eat it. Over time the association to even eat ice cream at home or at all begins to dissipate because you have not rewarded the association – thus you have behavioral change. Systematically identifying, removing and replacing your emotional and behavior association with food is a multi step proposition and usually requires help. I can help – schedule a time to discuss, id and narrow down your emotional eating patterns. There are lots of behavioral cues you have to deal with and I know them all. Let me help

Is this real?

skinnycoach-food-addiction-is-real

Food addiction is real. It has been recognized by scientists across the globe and it must be taken seriously. When you eat highly palatable foods like sugar and flour our taste buds send messages to our brain and release dopamine. However, in as little as THREE weeks of overeating the dopamine receptors started to get compromised. This leads the overeater needing more and more to get the same feeling – what is this called? Tolerance. Additionally, because the dopamine receptors have been compromised if you are not feeding yourself more and more then you feel bad because you are not getting normal amounts of these feel good hormones. What is this called? Withdrawal. Tolerance and withdrawal are the hallmarks of addiction with all addictive substances – cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes and SUGAR.

Willpower and moderation are not relevant options with addiction. The sugar and flour must be removed. Your brain must be clean from the substance and your body must detox. This is a biochemical reaction and willpower is ineffective in the face of a bio chemical reaction that happens every day of every week of every year. This is why a smoker can’t just decide to smoke less. The logically part of their brain, their executive function, does not have control anymore – the addictive reward system has control. No addictive treatment advocates moderation. No one ever says, just have one line of coke a day or one drink a day. The body and brain can be healed but FIRST you must detox from the substance through complete abstinence and SECOND, you must engage in evidenced based treatment that includes cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral modification therapy, talk therapy and group therapy. The Skinny Coach Solution offers all of this and that is why it works. That is why it will work for you. Please take a chance and schedule an appointment to talk.

Can you believe she said no?

skinnycoach-can-you-believe

I was teaching a workshop recently and a woman there had sleep apnea, was 100 pounds overweight, was on medication for weight related issues, and has a daughter following her eating path and had been talking to a Skinny Girl for 3 years about being a Skinny Girl. In fact, they had been talking about weight issues for years before that. Even knowing four people in her community that are on the Skinny Coach Solution – she still could not bring herself to help herself. The insidious nature of this disease still surprises me today. The food addicts mind is a computer of rationalizations, guaranteed to fool even the most astute. This computerized mind holds several rationalizations for every kind of situation. The people serious about getting control over their eating behavior, the behavior that is LITERALLY killing them has to be able to recognize the rationalizations before it is too late. As food addicts, we have been using these mind games for years and they are an integral party of their personality.

“I’ll have just one”

“I’ll start tomorrow”

“What will people say if I give up sugar”

“It’s the only thing that makes me happy”

“The holidays are coming”

The most important part of the Skinny Coach Solution is to get rid of these rationalizations and the feelings that come with them. We are vigilant and consistent. This is why a diet alone does not work. Without these changes in thoughts and attitudes you will go back to the treadmill of your inevitable obesity related death. Your diet must include a mental remake. The Skinny Coach Solution does just that. I can help you. It is a lifetime program so you can’t fail unless you quit.

Cocaine Addiction and Sugar

skinnycoach-sugar-cocaine

Do you think cocaine is addictive? Most people do, yet they deny that food is addictive. Remarks like eat less and exercise more are as futile as telling an alcoholic to simply not drink as much. Research has found that cocaine addicted rats work eight times harder to get sugar than cocaine. The researchers are quoted as saying, “Cocaine reward pales in comparison to sugar.” Other research found that even when giving rats electric shocks they will still continue to eat and seek sugar. Sugar is not like other foods and all calories are not the same. Sugar excites the reward part of your brain that activates addiction. Food and sugar specifically is biologically addictive — this is not an issue of willpower and just eat less is never going to cut it. If you can’t moderate, then the only answer is abstinence. Re-wire your brain to break your food addiction

skinnycoach-rewire-brain-blog-post

Your fat cells have been trained to take in and store excessive amounts of calories which means that less calories are in the body to fuel your metabolism – because of this your brain tells your body to increase your calories – In other words, eat more and save energy, in other words, store fat. New research from the Journal of the American Medical Association has shown that calories in, calories out has confused the cause and effect of our biology. Overeating does not cause us to be fat, in fact, being fat causes us to overeat.

But why are we so fat? Three times as many people are fatter today than in the 60’s. The reason is we have vastly increased the amount of highly refined carbohydrates that we are consuming. Highly refined carbohydrates, like sugar and flour, produce high glucose levels, which cause the body to produce too much insulin, which in turn prompts your body to store fat.

Proof? Certainly, another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that despite eating the SAME number of calories, people that ate a low fat diet burned 325 calories LESS then people that ate a low refined carb diet. That is equivalent to an hour of exercise.

The food industry is very motivated to promote the simplistic antiquated notion that all calories are created equal because the profit is immense. They can produce cheap, nutritionally deficient, highly addictive, food-like products and tell the public that, through no fault but their own, they over eat. Great business model but unfortunately it has caused a terrible obesity epidemic. It is the equivalent of putting vodka in 80% of the foods an alcoholic consumes and saying it is the fault of the alcoholic that they can’t moderate their intake.

There is a bottom line –

1) 1. Look at the ingredient list and if there is any sugar or flour listed- don’t eat it.

2) 2. Eat protein at every meal

3) 3. Eat enough food

If you need help with what to eat or how to re-wire your brain so that you can break your addiction to food – call me or email me.
