4 Secret Costs of Being Fat

It’s no surprise that being overweight or obese has a negative effect on your health. From joint pain to diabetes, poor sleep to shorter life expectancy, being fat is just plain bad for you.

But did you know that being fat is costing you more than just your health? That extra weight is hurting your pocketbook and endangering your life in some unexpected ways, too.

1. Over-Priced for Over-Sized Clothes
If you’re an overweight woman, you probably struggle with self imagine issues. You don’t like the way you look and struggle to find clothes that fit. You might also notice that you’re paying more for clothes. Many stores charge as much as double for plus-sized versions of their normal sized clothes. Boutique stores catering to the huskier set can set their prices at astonishing levels, as the market for extra large clothing grows. In addition, these plus-sized options are often scaled incorrectly, leaving them too tight in the bust, too big in the hip and too short to be decent, meaning you’re paying extra for a worse product. And that’s if your favorite store even carries plus-sized clothing, at all! Recently, all the H&M locations in New York City removed their plus-sized sections to make room for home goods and told over-weight shoppers to take their business online. Target, too, offers only a minimal plus-sized department in store, directing their bigger customers to the website (with shipping costs included, of course). Wouldn’t you like to be able to purchase something off the rack and for a reasonable price?

2. Overweight and Underpaid
If you’re paying extra for plus-sized clothes, you should at least be getting paid more at work. But that is rarely the case. Overweight worker make less money, are less likely to get promotions or raises, and are less productive than their thin colleagues. This wage discrimination stems from fat people being seen as lazy and less disciplined. Overweight workers are less likely to be hired because they are seen as a drain on resources; their health care cost tend to be higher. In addition to the perception of plus-sized workers is the fact that obese people do miss more work than thin people, up to a week extra per year, due to illnesses and complications caused by their weight. So next time you’re passed over for that big promotion or you’re turned down for a job, ask yourself this: Is your fat holding you back?

3. More ass? More gas.
Overweight and obese drivers contend with another “fat tax” at the gas pump. Having 100 extra pounds in the car can decrease your car’s fuel efficiency by nearly 2%! That can add up to $30 extra dollars a year. Obviously, the more you weigh or the more you drive, those costs start to increase. In addition, bigger drivers want bigger car to comfortably get around. These cars get even worse gas mileage, costing you more in the long run. Can you afford to stay fat if gas prices go up?

4. Bigger driver, bigger danger
Paying more at the pump isn’t the only car issue your weight is cause: you are also more likely to die in an accident than a thin driver. Overweight drivers will sometimes skip the seat beat, as they are too uncomfortable. Even if you do buckle up, seat beats and airs bags are designed for average sized driver and are not as effective in protect overweight people. Crash test dummies used to test car safety haven’t change size since they were first used in testing, meaning auto-maker have no data when it comes to plus-sized drivers. Fat drivers are also at a higher risk for getting into accidents. Many overweight people suffer from sleep apnea, making it harder for them to get a restful night’s sleep which in turn makes them tired during the day. Studies have shown that drowsy drivers are just as dangerous as drunk driver. This deadly combination leaves just one question: Are you willing to take that kind of a risk with your life?

So knowing all this, what is your excuse for staying fat? It can’t be money; you’re losing more money by not losing the weight. The status quo is obviously more dangerous than the unknown. Why are you denying yourself the chance to be happy, healthy and wealth!

Labor Day Food

Addiction is a scary word, but if you consume sugar and refined flour, your body is addicted to it in just the same way an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol or a heroin addict is to heroin. Sugar and flour trigger chemical responses in your brain. Sugar and flour make you feel good and, with repeated use of these substances, your brain begins to crave more and more sugar and flour to be satisfied. When you try lose weight, you go through chemical withdrawal. Your brain increases these cravings, making weight loss difficult, if not impossible.

But you can change. This Labor Day can be a turning point for you. You don’t have to be a prisoner of your cravings.

Labor Day BBQ – YUMMY

Delicious baby back ribs drenched in BBQ sauce, creamy potato salad, HOT DOGS, homemade pie, beer, corn on the cob, coleslaw – it is all so wonderful – but deadly for the waistline.

The average amount of calories consumed at an outdoor BBQ feast hovers around 3000! …and that is if you are eating a normal amount of everything. If you really overeat, you could tip 7000 calories in one afternoon. No one wants to think about a diet during the Labor Day festivities, but try to at least keep the damage as low as possible.

Imagine if you had a burger and skipped the bun, cheese, mayo and sauces? You can taste the wonder of a beautifully grilled sirloin burger and save hundreds of calories. How would you feel Monday night if you declined the mayo-drenched coleslaw, potato and macaroni salad. What if you ate lots of sweet watermelon and peaches instead of pie and ice cream?

Is your child a dog?

Don’t reward yourself with food – you are not a dog!

Turns out that when you reward your children with food it can trigger emotional eating when they grow up – DUH!

While most parents try to keep their children from eating bad foods they also often reward good behavior or ease pain with these exact foods and it has been shown concretely from research at both Loughborough and Birmingham universities that children were much more likely to emotionally eat later in their lives if their parents used food as a reward or to ease pain.

If you are an emotional eater can you remember instances in your childhood where your parents rewarded a good grade with a special dessert, or perhaps went for ice cream after a win in sports, how about a lollipop after a penicillin shot at the doctors (remember those?), the dentist even gave us candy after filling a cavity! I can think of many ways in which I was given food to placate or deal with bad AND good events and emotions so according to this research I am not surprised I am addicted to food.

The good news is perhaps we can do better for our children now that we know. Think of other ways to celebrate and comfort your children now before the moment happens so that you are equipped.

Now what about you? Is it too late? No, of course not, you can establish new connections, new patterns and change your relationship with food. Unfortunately, because emotional eating is so rooted and cemented in the neural connections of the brain it is nearly impossible to change on your own because you only have the brain you have – the one that currently makes those connections. Obligation

You have an obligation to be health for your family. Many women put themselves last as part of a family. Their children come first, their husbands come first, sometimes even the dog comes before the woman. If you are a woman like that then I want to say to you, you have an obligation to your children, to your husband and … to your dog (just kidding) to be healthy. Being overweight reduces your lifespan and contributes to mood swings, pain, sickness and depression. However, it does something else, something just as devastating. Feelings like that can permeate your entire life, making you feel like you are not able to do what you want to do, that you are a failure. Do you have a brain disorder?

Finally, what a relief, it has finally been proven by 80 experts – 80 experts involving a four-year long process that addiction is not a social or moral problem but a brain problem. Food addiction is a neurological problem. Addiction has been treated as a result of emotional problems, a result of trauma, a result of low moral character – and that is why addiction treatment does not work.

After over 20 years of neuroscience research we know that addiction is rooted in the brain’s reward circuitry. Previous experiences with food trigger cravings and to repeat the process because this is the part of the brain that controls impulses and judgement and it damage is permanent. Addiction

The word addiction carries a lot of preconceptions. Most of us, when we hear the dirty word “addiction,” we think of a degenerate in a dark alley. One might be surprised at how widespread addiction truly is. Let’s discuss the addiction of a less obvious nature- sugar.

The definition of addiction is “a state characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences.” Broader than you might have imagined, isn’t it? When an alcoholic is “diagnosed” they are considered an addict for life. Even once they are off the alcohol, the call themselves a recovering addict. The reason is because they know that if they consume alcohol they will not be able to stop consuming, even if it hurts them. You’ll also find the literature on alcoholics state that they have a “disease” and they cannot help their lack of control in that area.

Now let’s talk about an addiction that is closer to home. Sugar addiction. When you eat sugar it lights up the same part of the brain as cocaine. Additionally, you are flooded with serotonin and other “feel good” hormones. You therefore, continue to consume the sugar because of the wildly enjoyable rewarding feeling that comes after you consume the sweets. As you continue doing this, repeatedly, day after day, you begin to feel the adverse consequences. You are tired, lethargic, sickly, and FAT. And yet, as shocking as it may seem, you (and your fat body) walk to the kitchen to consume more of this sickening and fattening drug.

You are addicted to sugar. You consume sugar regardless of the adverse consequences you experience. You can’t stop yourself. You have the disease known as sugar addiction. Just like if you were addicted to crack or alcohol you truly can never consume sugar again. As soon as you do you will lose control again! People say that as soon as you admit to yourself that you have a problem you can begin the road to recovery. Start your road to recovery now.

I LOVE BREAD

“I love bread!” Oprah announces to the world on the newest Weight Watchers commercial. The shock heard round the world! Oprah who has publicly admitted to having a food addiction is off the wagon again. Most people had mixed feelings about seeing Oprah in the last place we expected to see our idol. Unfortunately, it’s not a surprise. Abstinence is hard and Oprah couldn’t pull it off (too bad she didn’t have the skinny coach!) As the shock from seeing her praising bread diminished, the relief of knowing that if Oprah is fat- it’s okay that I’m fat too replaced it.

The constant waves of dieting is a battle that every fat person knows well. First you try the moderation, then you try the tricks, then you try no carb or no fat… Sadly, you may lose a few pounds to begin with but almost always gain it back- plus a few more. Just like Oprah, you are trying to heal yourself through methods that simply don’t work! You know you have an addiction, so does Oprah. And any other addiction it would be obvious that you have to stay off the stuff you can’t’ control, and get help in doing so. People don’t sit in rehab alone; they are surrounded by coaches, therapists and people that give them the tools to stay off the drug.

We have to eat food, and therefore we have to abstain from specific things that we can’t control. To do this, you need help. If you could give up sugar on your own you would have! You know its sugar that’s making you fat- but you just can’t seem to stop yourself. Most people cannot (i.e. Oprah). That’s where having a coach or a mentor will help you succeed where you have failed before.

The Big 3 – Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Atkins

If you’re like most people, you have tried more diets than you can count. Additionally, you have likely tried them and failed- whether you lost weight immediately or not- you weigh the same now, or more than you did before the diet. Why can’t you keep the weight off?

Weight Watchers: It’s all about moderation! That’s rubbish! If you could moderate, you would. If you could moderate you would be just like all of the millions of thin people in the world. You’re not confused. You know when you eat a cheeseburger, fries and a coke that you are contributing to your fat self. Counting calories will work in the short term- but once you get bored putting your calories in your phone all day, every day, you’ll go back to eating how you did before. There is no change here.

Jenny Craig: This one is obvious. They provide you with the frozen premade food (ick) and they charge you a ton of money for it. This is obviously not a sustainable method to lose weight. You can’t realistically spend hundreds of dollars on premade food for the rest of your life. You also can’t assume you’ll always be eating alone or at home- you have to have a life. So this diet will only work as long as you get their meals- and then you’ll gain the weight back as soon as you start eating your own food. You haven’t learned any skills, you haven’t discovered any new ways of eating.

Atkins: The principles of Atkins are not all bad. The idea of cutting out bad carbohydrates is great. If you’re eating dirty carbs, you’re really eating sugar and that ultimately will make you fat. But good grains, like brown rice, quinoa, or millet will give you necessary fiber and energy that will help you lose weight and maintain your health. Giving up all carbs, and eating fat with wild abandon will make you fat. Physically you may see results immediately, but ultimately, this is not sustainable method because this is not how our bodies are made to work.

Food Crisis – What to do when the cravings hit

The easiest part of any diet is the starting. The planning the food, the coaching, the gearing up; these are the moments that are fun and exciting. But, what about when you’ve been on the diet one or two days and you are hungry (or at least you think you are) and you’re ready to eat something BAD!

Imagine for a moment you’ve been on a healthy eating plan, like the Skinny Coach diet, and you’re feeling great, but you have just had a fight with your husband and suddenly, as if from nowhere you hear a small voice calling to you… “Eat me!!!” It’s the ice cream!!!! What do you do next?

    Are you tired of the word “lifestyle change?”

    “It’s not about starting another diet, it’s about making a lifestyle change!” Lifestyle is the buzz word right now as people are becoming painfully aware that diets have a dark and dirty under belly. Unfortunately, while we may hear it every day it doesn’t change the fact that when you wake up tomorrow, and start eating 1200 calories a day and exercising like Peyton Manning you feel like you’re on a DIET.

    Allow me to clarify what the difference between another diet and having a true and meaningful lifestyle change. Your body has been on one diet or another since you were born. Whether it was the ‘junk food diet’, the ‘I’m in college and eat Top Ramen diet’, or the ‘I’m pregnant, step away slowly diet’; either way it’s a diet. It’s a conscious decision to eat a certain way every day- that literally is all a diet is. Think for a moment the first time you tried something; for instance, your favorite ice cream- once you started eating that ice cream, once you realized you liked it and it made you feel good, you started eating that food repeatedly. Therefore, making that ice cream a part of your diet. Once the ice cream became a regular part of your diet, it became a lifestyle change in which you now eat ice cream almost every day. You can see through this chain of thinking – a diet decision became a lifestyle change before your very eyes.

    Of course, that leads to the next thought- which is how can I make healthy food that will make me thin, healthy and happy a lifestyle change. There is good news and bad news. Our brain is very clear about what it desires, if you consume something that rewards your pleasure center you will crave that thing… Potentially a lot. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can train your brain that healthy food, while it may not light up your pleasure center right away, still makes you feel good and right. If you eat good wholesome food every day, and you never get stomach aches or bloats from rich food, or indigestion from fatty or greasy food, and you feel light and energetic, your brain will get that message. That means that you are always speaking with your brain, you are constantly trying to communicate. If you tell your brain and body that the best you can do is light up that reward center- it will take what it can get. But if you tell your brain that these certain foods can make you clearer, give you less headaches, and allow you to be at your best- your brain will hear you!

    So the truth of the matter is that everyone starts a ‘diet.’ You can’t escape it, if you are eating in a way that is making your fat and sick today, you will have to start a diet if you want to be thin, and healthy- there’s no trick. But once you start that diet, once you (and your brain) really believe that this diet food is rewarding and making you feel good- you will start to crave good food!! Believe me, today I crave yummy creamy yogurt with cooked apples and cinnamon- and my brain believes me!
